A 24-year-old transient woman is in custody in the Butte County Jail after attempting to bite a Chico Police Officer and assaulting one of the officers with a tree branch this morning.

Just after 8:30 a.m. officers were called to the back of 1045 Park Ave. to a report of a woman camping on the property and refusing to leave at the request of the property owner. According to the Department, the property owner reportedly asked the transient to leave on Saturday but she refused to do so.

When officers arrived the woman, identified as Barbara Thompson, was uncooperative and continued to refuse to leave the property. She also reportedly gave the officers a false name. As the officers attempted to arrest her for trespassing, she reportedly became combative and allegedly attempted to bite one of the officers. During the struggle Thompson then reportedly struck one of the officers in the head with a tree branch before she was subdued.

The officer was not seriously injured and was able to continue his shift. Thompson is being held on resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer, and providing false information to a peace officer.
