Chico Police arrested a man this morning who is suspected of molesting a young girl over a five year period, beginning when the girl was only five years old.

In February the Chico Police Department Detective Bureau began an investigation into allegations of a child molestation that had occurred seven years ago.

During the investigation, a 17-year-old-girl told detectives she had been molested by Jose Lugo, who goes by "Miguel Lugo” from 2002-2007.

According to a press release, the molestations started when the victim was only five-years-old and continued for approximately 5 years.

Lugo obviously had access to the child, but investigators will not release the dynamics of their relationship at this time. Lugo has a prior conviction for child molestation and is required to register as a sex offender pursuant to the California Registry Act.

During their investigation detectives developed probable cause to seek a warrant for Lugo’s arrest.

Police arrested Lugo this at 11:00 a.m. today and booked into Butte County Jail for continuous sexual abuse of a child, along with special enhancements for committing the crimes against a child younger than 10 years old, and for committing the crimes while having a prior conviction for sexual abuse of a child.
