Chico Police, PG&E and Pete's Restaurant would like to warn residents and business owners about a new phone scam occurring in Chico.
On Tuesday June 15 a man called the owners of Pete's Restaurant and claimed to be a bill collector for PG&E. The suspect demanded immediate payment and threatened to end electricity services within an hour if no payment was received.
When the suspect learned the business was busy with customers, he became more aggressive trying to get a payment over the phone.
The owner did not provide any personal account information. Instead, she questioned the man about his validity and payment procedures and then asked to speak with a supervisor.
Chico Police say anyone that receives a similar call, should ask similar questions.
The police department and PG&E would like to remind people that legitimate businesses have payment procedures that can be verified with their parent companies.
Further inquiries into the PG&E payment procedures or PG&E related scams can be made to, PG&E Customer Service at 800-PGE-5000 or PG&E Corporate Security Control Center at 800-691-0410.
