Chico police say gunshots narrowly missed a group of children as they played in front of an apartment complex Thursday evening.

Officers are investigating a drive-by shooting that happened around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Turning Point Commons Apartments on Vista Verde Avenue.

Witnesses say two black men sped through the complex parking lot in a smaller sized SUV, firing off several rounds.

When officers arrived on the scene they found several shell casings scattered across the parking lot, and a car riddled with bullet holes, but fortunately no injuries. Police say this situation is particularly disturbing because a group of children were playing steps away from where the gunmen allegedly fired.

This is the second time in the last month that police have responded to a report of shots fired in this area of Vista Verde Avenue. On September 25 a woman was assaulted and several shots were fired. At this time it is unknown if the incidents are related.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the Chico Police Department.
