The Chico Police Department says low staffing levels are forcing the department to mandate overtime for officers.
The mandatory overtime went into effect nearly two weeks ago, the department says for the past two years the department has been struggling to maintain adequate staffing levels.
There have not been any layoffs, but vacancies have gone unfilled. Officials say this is the first time overtime has been mandated with patrolling. Officers will not be filling all the vacancies, but are signing up for shifts that are understaffed.
Last week, city and business leaders announced they would increase patrols downtown, but the mandatory overtime will not be used to staff those patrols.
The department says overtime will not have an impact on the budget or require additional dollars because of salary saving fro, vacancies.
The mandatory overtime is expected to be in place through mid-January.
