The Chico Police Department has a new K9. Long time Chico resident Virginia Jordan passed away in 2013, leaving a portion of her estate to the Chico Police Department's K9 Unit. Her bequest was for the exclusive purpose of purchasing, training and caring for police dogs. This past February the Chico City Council accepted the donation.

In August, 2015 the police department held a testing and selection process to fill a vacant K9 Handler position. Officer Brandon Joseph was selected by Chief Mike O'Brien to fill that position.

The Police K9 was selected from the department's vendor and trainer, Vigilant Canine Services International (VCSI.) He is a 19 month old Belgian Malinois named "Pax." Officer Joseph and Pax attended a five week Basic K9 Handlers Course together and graduated on November 13. Pax is certified for patrol operations and narcotics detection. They are currently in service and assigned to the patrol division.
