Officials with the City of Chico have announced that Chico Police Captain Michael O'Brien will be named the city's new Chief of Police.

The city announced the decision Thursday morning, City Manager Mark Orme said in a news release, "In rebuilding this City's foundation, it's integral that I have leadership who have integrity, character, exceptional skills in their area of profession, and a willingness to collaborate with other City departments, community partners and citizens to effect positive change. This City deserves a leader that is dedicated to and understands Chico's unique and unparalleled quality of life and who is willing to do what is necessary to preserve that expectation for our citizens and visitors alike. I too desire a leader who can garner the respect and level of trust necessary with the City Council, within the Police Department, and throughout the community. All of this to say that I've found that man - who encompasses all of the attributes I desire and this community deserves - and I am proud to say that Mike O'Brien is the man to lead our Police Department into the future."

City Councilmember Randall Stone was first to announce the decision on his Facebook page Thursday morning. "I am pleased to announce that City Manager Mark Orme has selected Michael O'Brien as our new Chico Police Chief, effective June 5."

O'Brien previously served as the department's Operations Division Commander. He brings nearly 27 years of law enforcement experience to the position, with 23 of those dedicated years in Chico.

O'Brien issued the following statement Thursday morning, "I am extremely humbled and honored to serve the department and community in this capacity. While it has been a difficult last couple years, I have great faith in the men and women of this department, and in this community. Chico is a special place. While the challenges we all face are significant, I am convinced that better days are ahead. I look forward to leading this department into the future, and will outline what that looks like in the coming weeks."

Former Chico Police Chief Kirk Trostle announced his retirement in November, and City Manager Mark Orme began a nationwide recruitment process in January.

Mike Dunbaugh, who was Chico's police chief from 1992 to 1996, is acting as interim Chief of Police.

Stone says Dunbaugh will continue to meet with new Chief O'Brien to assist in the advancement of the department as a community oriented, publicly accountable organization.
