The Chico planning commission unanimously approved a plan Thursday night for the California Highway Patrol to move into a larger facility in South Chico.

CHP officials are hopeful they could move into the new facility by next summer. The new building would be located in south Chico off of Highway 99 at Southgate Lane and would 40,000 square feet, including the office and emergency dispatch center.

The Chico CHP says they have outgrown the current building on Fir Street, where the agency has been located for more than 35 years.

Once a permit is approved the building process will take approximately 18 months.
