The Chico Police Department received a report from the family of an elderly citizen who was an intended victim of fraud. According to the CPD press release, the woman received a phone call from someone telling her she had won a lottery, and was asked to send the caller money in order to claim her prize. She later received another phone call from an individual who identified themselves as a Chico Police officer, ensuring her the first phone call was legitimate and it was safe to send the money. Chico Police want to make aware of this type of scam which is very common and often targets senior citizens. The fraudulent activity was likely sparked by California's Powerball Lottery this Wednesday.
