Chico Police Officers responded to a report of a burglary at the office of Lakeview Apartments located at 2581 California Park Dr. just after 8 a.m. When they arrived they learned the suspects had broken into the office and stole a ring of master keys to the apartment complex.
Officers immediately began a door-to-door search to identify any possible victims. They eventually located six apartments which had been burglarized. In each case, the suspects entered the apartments with a master key and removed purses, wallets, laptops and tablets, according to the Chico Police Department. In five of those six burglaries, the residents slept through the crime unaware of the burglars’ presence. The department stated in its press release one victim awoke and thought he heard someone running from his apartment.
At 11 a.m. an officer spotted a male subject he knew to be on OR/Bail release from the Butte County Jail near the intersection of Manzanita and Mariposa Avenues. The officer made contact with the subject who was in a vehicle with another male subject. The officer found the two subjects, identified as 29-year-old Lane Larkin of Chico and 19-year-old Brian Martin of Paradise, in possession of property from some of the earlier burglaries. Both Larkin and Martin were taken into custody and booked into the Butte County Jail. The department indicated detectives will be conducting additional follow-ups regarding this incident because although some of the stolen items were returned, detectives believe more items are still outstanding.
