The Chico Nuts American Legion baseball team kicked off the Area 1 playoffs in style Wednesday, pounding Santa Rosa 13-0 at Clark Field in Woodland.
Gridley's Quinn Spring went 4-for-4 with three RBI's. Oroville's Jackson Berry got the win, firing a complete-game shutout giving up just three hits and two walks with zero strikeouts.
The game lasted just seven innings due to the ten-run mercy rule.
Chico came out the gates swinging, scoring three first-inning runs, allowing Berry to concentrate on throwing strikes and letting his defense take care of the rest.
J.T. Morris had two hits and scored two runs. Ryan Steindorf, Samson Abernathy and Blake Vierra tallied two hits apiece as well.
Chico scraped together a total of 14 hits on the day.
The Nuts (33-8-1) play Napa at 4 p.m. Thursday at Clark Field in the double-elimination tournament.
