The Chico Nuts advanced to the championship of their own Father's Day Classic tournament with a 16-2 victory over El Segundo Saturday at Doryland Field.
But the whooping fourteen-point win fails to tell the true story.
Chico entered the day tied with Petaluma in pool play record (3-0-1) and runs allowed.
Earlier in the day Petaluma defeated Reno 11-3, meaning Chico had to beat El Segundo and hold them to two runs or less to advance to the title match.
Things got dicey in the fifth inning. Two errors behind pitcher Jackson Berry gave the Eagles a bases loaded situation with no outs, but the right-harder out of Oroville responded with a strikeout.
Then Jackson Stone hit a single to right field, but Justin Beth came up with the biggest play of the game by gunning down the potential third run at the plate.
Berry got out of the jam by getting the next hitter to ground out to first baseman Marcus Wilhite.
Chico went onto win 16-2.
They'll play the San Mateo Shockers for all the marbles Sunday at 2:15 p.m. at Doryland Field.
