A man accused of murdering a Chico woman last month purposely knocked himself out during a court hearing Thursday.

Christopher Swihart is accused of killing Cass Edison on March 16, but before the 48-year-old or his attorney addressed the court Thursday, he knocked himself out by slamming his head against the counsel table and then fell to the courtroom floor.

Swihart was tended to by two Butte County sheriff's deputies, then removed from the court and taken back to the jail for evaluation.

A few hours later Swihart was brought back into court wearing a green "suicide wrap," to keep him from attempting anything dramatic.

Swihart proceeded to withdraw his plea of Not Guilty and entered a Dual Plea of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.
