About two weeks ago Chico Mayor Scott Gruendl received a ticket for going 102 mph while driving north on Highway 99 near South Gate, north of Butte Creek.

Earlier today Gruendl told Action News Now reporter Brian Johnson that he was “coming home from watching my sister die and would be home for a couple nights before going back to bury her”.

Gruendl said that he was close to home when he was passed by a speeding car that he then “stayed in tandem with”. “Sadly after 200 miles of traveling that evening, I was irresponsible in the last three miles before pulling into my home.”

Gruendl did not tell the officer who pulled him over that he was the mayor and said he plans to accept responsibility for his actions.

Gruendl must appear in court and he faces up to $500 in fines and a 30 day license suspension.
