A homeless man is recovering in the hospital after being dumped in a garbage truck Thursday morning.
Chico fire responded to the call at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday of a man trapped in a garbage truck compactor. The dumpster was located near the intersection of 12th and Park avenues in Chico.
Chico Fire Chief Bill Hack said the man was lucky and the results could have been disastrous.
"Unfortunately there were no signs of someone inside the dumpster,” he said. “They made several stops before they noticed or heard that someone was inside the dumpster.”
Authorities said they aren’t releasing the identity of the man but say he was sleeping in the dumpster when waste management picked made the pick-up.
They say the driver continued on his route for an estimated 4 more stops until he had to get out to unlock a gate. That's when he heard someone yelling for help.
Waste Management did not allow the drivers to be interviewed but said the trash compacter in the truck is run at every stop.
