A Chico man was robbed at gunpoint and hit in the head several times with a handgun Sunday evening, police say.

Police were called to a reported robbery in the area of the Esplanade and Panama Avenue around 6 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived they found a 30-year-old Chico man with a bloody head.

The man told officers another man had just approached him and attempted to take his backpack. The alleged robber then pulled a semi-automatic handgun and began striking him over the head demanding money.

The victim said that after getting his money the robber fled by bike down Panama Avenue. The victim was able to give police a detailed description of the suspect and officers were able to locate the man on the campus of Fairview High School a short time later.

As officers approached the man he rode westbound on East Avenue, and was eventually taken into custody at the AM/PM Mini Mart at the corner of the Esplanade and East Avenue.

The alleged robber was identified as Eric L. Gaines and has been booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery.

The victim was treated for a cut to his head and is expected to be okay.
