Well over 200 copper thefts from air conditioning units have been reported since 2012, and now Chico Police have one man in custody tied to 149 of those incidents. John McCrary, 46, of Chico was arrested Saturday night. Officers responded to a tampered alarm of an air conditioning unit at 40 Philadelphia Drive around midnight and found McCrary dressed in all black leaving the scene. The unit showed signs of vandalism and looked as if someone was trying to steal the copper. Replacements can cost anywhere from $3,000-$5,000 for residential units and up to $25,000 for large commercial units. McCrary was arrested for possession of burglary tools and methamphetamines, and vandalism.
