Police say they have arrested a suspect in an assault that left another man seriously injured outside a Chico bar on Super Bowl Sunday.

Police say at around 11:15 p.m. February 1 they responded to a fight outside Riley's Bar on W. 5th and Ivy Streets. Officers found 28-year-old Mathew Giordano unconscious near the intersection when they arrived.

During the course of their investigation, officers learned Giordano had been in a fight over a girl. The suspect walked passed Giordano and punched him in the face. Witnesses told police that Giordano did not see the punch coming and had no way of defending himself.

The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived, but through the help of witnesses he was identified as Anthony Marini, 32 of Chico.

At around 8 a.m. Thursday morning police served a warrant at Marini's home and took him into custody. He was booked into the Butte County Jail for assault and battery with great bodily injury.

Giordano was released from the hospital Thursday morning, he suffered a serious brain injury, but is expected to survive. However, he is now facing a lifetime of complications and his friends and family have set up a gofundme account to help with medical expenses.
