A Chico Man is behind bars after attempting to drive around the crossing arms and beat a train near Meridian Road early this morning. After colliding with the train the man fled the scene with two passengers still in the car.
The driver, identified by CHP as 44-year-old Luke Morrow, was driving his 1994 Chevrolet truck northbound on Meridian Road south of Bell Road just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. Morrow was traveling with two other passengers, identified as 27-year-old Brian Chissle of Yuba City and 32-year-old Sara Jorden of Chico. According to CHP’s press release, Morrow attempted to drive around the crossing arms and beat a train also traveling northbound. The train was unable to stop and collided with the rear of the truck. The truck then spun off the road and rolled onto the west shoulder. After the truck came to a stop Morrow fled the scene on foot.
Morrow was later arrested at a nearby residence. He was transported to Enloe Medical Center for major injuries to his head. Both Chissle and Jorden were transported to Enloe for their injuries. Chissle was being treated for a minor shoulder injury while Jorden was being treated for a major back/neck injuries. Enloe had no information to provide us regarding their current conditions.
Morrow was later released from the hospital and taken into custody for felony hit and run and for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. CHP also indicated a “large amount” of marijuana was found at the scene of the accident, but could not specify the exact amount at the time of our inquiry.
