Chico Fire says couch burning culture must change

Chico Fire said the long-standing tradition of Chico State students burning couches is getting out of hand, and getting worse.

Fire Chief Shane Lauderdale said they've seen at least 30 since August, including 14 this weekend.

Eight of those 14 fires happened Saturday night, after Lauderdale spoke to students at the BMU Saturday morning addressing the problem.

Lauderdale said they've been lucky that couch fires like the one that spread to a fraternity in August haven't had a horrific outcome.

"It is just a matter of time if that risky behavior continues, that we're going to have an incident where someone is injured or killed," Lauderdale said.

Lauderdale said they are now taking a three prong attack to combat this issue, including aggressively prosecuting these crimes.
