According to the Chico Fire Department, Chief Jim Beery has sent an email to his colleagues and city managers, notifying them that he is resigning. Beery has been with the Chico Fire Department for five years, and he before that, he worked in Portland, Oregon. He has been a firefighter for more than 3 decades. Beery has cited personal reasons for his departure. Beery has presided over a department that has been struggling to maintain full strength due to budget issues in recent years. Last year, the department was forced to close station 5 for several weeks. This year, his department is facing another possible station closure in an effort to help the city close a $4.8 million budget gap for the upcoming fiscal year.
