CHICO, Calif. (AP) — More than 1,800 chickens will be looking for new homes after a Chico egg producer closes its doors next month.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the sanctuary Animal Place is hoping to recruit would-be owners for the red hens by April 4.

The sanctuary is holding adoption events at its Vacaville quarters on the next three Fridays.

Animal Place will keep some of the Chico flock, but there are limits to how many birds it can keep.

The Sonoma Humane Society is helping coordinate the adoptions.
