The Chico City Council Tuesday night voted another brief reprieve for Chico Scrap Metal. The business has been operating at its East 20th Street location since the 1980s. But in 2004 the city rezoned the area, adopting a plan for future development. Since then the business has been given two extensions - the most recent expired December 31st.
Tuesday night the council voted four to three to allow the business to work with the city attorney's office to develop a plan that would allow it to stay at its current location and* still be in compliance with all city codes, which it currently is not doing. That plan must be presented to the city council within 90 days. Until then, Chico Scrap Metal will be allowed to continue its operations.
