Chico Clerks Take Down Alleged Armed Robber

Chico police may have two clerks to thank for catching an armed man suspected in two other strong-armed robberies this week. Saturday night at 9:18pm, investigators say a man wearing a surgical mask fitting the description of the man who robbed the Circle K Friday night, entered the Sierra Market and Liquor Store at 1710 Park Avenue. According to clerk Denis Nieto, he was hidden from the man's view, and he witnessed the man with a gun rush his partner. Nieto jumped at him from behind and the two clerks wrestled the alleged robber to the ground and kicked his gun away. They held him there until police arrived.
Police say suspect Douglas Friedrich, 61, matches the description of the man who entered Circle K at 1105 Park Avenue at 9:15pm Friday, showed a gun, and demanded cash. He was able to escape, and Saturday afternoon, Chico police circulated the surveillance photo in the hopes of identifying him with help from the public.
Investigators say they are also looking into whether he is the same man who robbed the Shell Station at 2014 Oro Dam Boulevard Thursday night. The man in the surveillance photo is described as about 65 years old, and is seen wearing a surgical mask. Friedrich was wearing a surgical mask when he was apprehended Saturday night. Friedrich was taken into custody and is being booked into the Butte County Jail.
