Organizers with Chico Clean and Safe hosted a first-of-it's-kind meeting with the community Wednesday night, hoping to hear new ideas on how to deal with homeless people sleeping and hanging around in doorways and on sidewalks downtown. More than 100 people showed up to the El Rey Theater, including law enforcement with the Chico Police Department and Butte County Sheriff's Office, local business owners, homeless advocates, and members of the community. Program organizers gave an update on progress made since it's inception, including drafting the sit/lie and social host ordinances. Other ideas were tossed around, including the possibility of hiring private security workers to help fill in the gaps at the financially-strapped police department. Members of the outreach program said they were excited about the progress, and were looking forward to hosting more community meetings.
