Chico City Council votes to dispose of Salem Street property

The Chico City Council has voted to dispose of a century old Salem Street property, in the heart of the barber neighborhood.

The property that's been vacant for more than 5 years used to shelter victims of domestic violence. Since then, it's received little to no maintenance. Citizen complaints have prompted officials to consider a sale.

The city purchased the house built in 1906 for local nonprofit use. It is on a list of properties that will be considered to dispose of.
City officials say this is an opportunity to be accountable for property they hold but cannot maintain.

Because the house was purchased with federal dollars, it has to go through a formal process, allowing agencies, that would like to build affordable housing, to low- and moderate-income families, the opportunity to look and possibly purchase. Ultimately, it goes back to council for a final vote on whether to sell.
