The Chico City Council on Tuesday will discuss whether or not Chico's smoking laws should be expanded to include e-cigarettes.

Submitted by Councilmember Ann Schwab, the proposal asks that the council discuss prohibiting e-cigarettes in all places where smoking is already prohibited.

Electronic cigarettes vaporize nicotine in a liquid solution, and the smoker inhales vapor rather than tar and other harmful compounds in tobacco. The battery-operated devices, which are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, can be bought online and in convenience stores and smoke shops.

Critics say electronic cigarettes are a gateway to smoking, but others say the products are not nearly as harmful as traditional tobacco products. In January, California Health Officials said e-cigarettes are a health threat, especially to children and should be regulated strictly.

Shasta County passed e-cigarette restrictions last year and implemented the changes in January.
