Chico City Council passes tough new homeless ordinance

The Chico City Council Tuesday night passed an ordinance that was developed to help deal with the city's homeless issue.

The enhanced ordinance amends a sit and lie ordinance that was already on the books for the city.

Police officers now have the authority to arrest the homeless for infractions, rather than just issue citations.

The storage of personal property in public, obstruction of entrances to buildings, camping in and around the civic center area, and in public waterways will all be prohibited and considered misdemeanor offenses.

More than 50 people signed up to voice their opinion to council members on the proposed ordinance.

After listening to public comment for nearly two hours, the council voted six to one in favor of the ordinance. The lone no vote came from Councilwoman Tami Ritter.

The enhanced ordinance was put together with the input from rank and file police officers who deal with the homeless on a daily basis.
