The Chico City Council Tuesday approved the reorganization of the Fire Department, to put a greater focus on risk reduction.
The new model is a proactive approach to identifying risks within the community and addressing them.
Through arson investigation training for firefighters and promotions, Chico Fire will be able to a put a community risk reduction division in place. The plan is ultimately expected to save the city more than $115,000.
Under the plan one captain will become a division chief of community risk reduction and will head a division consisting of a fire prevention officer, fire inspector and a fire prevention specialist.
Public outreach and education will be a major focus of the division, as well as the mandatory inspections of older homes in some of the south campus and downtown neighborhoods.
