A Chico cab company raised more than $1,000 for cancer research during their inaugural “Ride for Life” taxi fundraiser April 14 and 15.

Liberty Cab’s program raised $1,374 for cancer research organization American Cancer Society and Relay for Life,

During a 24-hour event, Liberty’s drivers donated all fares during one hour shift to Relay for Life. All funds raised were matched by Liberty Cab.

“We are incredibly proud of our drivers and their overwhelming support of this cause,” said Liberty Cab Owner Gianni Caponera. “We look forward to making this an annual event and continuing to drive awareness and fundraising in pursuit of a cure.”

Eighteen drivers participated in the relay, with a few signing up for multiple legs. Together, they raised and donated $687 for Relay for Life, and Liberty matched the donation dollar for dollar.

“I was honored to take part in this new fundraiser and encouraged by the tremendous support of so many of my fellow drivers,” said driver Mark Taylor. “I can’t wait for next year and the opportunity to generate even more support for the cause.”

Liberty Cab will continue to promote Relay for Life and offer registration cards until next month’s event, as well as continue to promote the event through Liberty’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
