A big spring cleaning got underway in downtown Chico today, following the busy holiday weekend. Graduation weekend draws thousands of visitors to Chico every year. and with crowds of people comes loads of trash left behind. Rather than letting the litter cover the streets, downtown business owners are doing something about it. This morning's efforts are part of a bigger campaign called Respect Chico. Local bar and restaurant owners are working together to try and clean up the downtown area and encourage others to do the same.
Doug Roberts, owner of Duffy’s Tavern, says, "We definitely want to promote the image of downtown and make it an attractive, nice place to go. Cleaning up the trash is part of that."
Tuesday's cleanup is part of a campaign aimed at encouraging consumers to respect not only the community, but themselves and others. The group is also hopeful that they will be able to educate local youth about the dangers of binge drinking. Ultimately, business owners and the chamber of commerce want to create new traditions , like regular cleanup efforts, that will benefit the community.
"We're just trying to send a message that we want to be part of the solution to some of the problems with the community," says Roberts.
Participating bars and restaurants also handed out bottled water to customers over the weekend as a message to drink responsibly.
