Chico banker arrested on elder abuse, embezzlement charges

A Chico banker was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and embezzlement Tuesday after he allegedly stole nearly $90,000 from a 91-year-old client.

In September of last year Butte County Adult Protective Services was notified that a local banker, 37-year-old Jeffrey McClure, may have stolen more than $88,000 from a 91-year-old woman by gaining her trust over repeated meetings at the Oakmont Retirement Home.

The Chico Police Department Detective Bureau picked up the case after it was initially reported and detectives learned the victim had come to trust McClure with money that she and her now deceased husband had saved in anticipation of her long term needs.

Investigators learned that McClure would have the woman sign blank checks and he would deposit the funds into his personal account. McClure allegedly deposited dozens of the victim's checks into his own account over a two year period.
