The "Check Before You Light" program is now underway in Butte County.
It's voluntary for everyone but residents of Chico, where it's mandatory that you not burn wood in your woodstove or fireplace on days designated by the the Butte County Air Quality Management District. Violations for Chico residents could bring a fine.
Burning is discouraged on days where weather conditions would trap pollution caused by the wood smoke.
To check conditions you can visit the Butte County Air Quality Management District website at bcaqmd.org or call (530) 332-9409. The toll free line is 1-855-332-9409.
