Charles Berlinghoff was found dead in his locked jail cell early Saturday morning. His body was found shortly after midnight by a Shasta County correctional officer making his rounds. Officials say Berlinghoff had allegedly used a sheet to hang himself. He was the only person in the locked jail cell at the time of the incident. Berlinghoff didn't respond to correctional officer's attempts to revive him. He was transported to a Redding hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Berlinghoff was facing 87 felony counts of lewd acts with a child including unlawful detention of a minor and incest. He was arrested December 11th in San Francisco after being wanted for more than a month for kidnapping his 15-year-old niece. He was scheduled to begin trial on January 10, 2012. He faced 40 years in prison if convicted.

Shasta County officials are still investigating his alleged suicide. 29 inmates who had contact with Berlinghoff have been interviewed by authorities.

Berlinghoff's brother contacted Action News Friday, stating that Charles wanted to speak with a reporter. The request to interview him was denied by the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.
