An unusually cold spring storm is bringing heavy rain, hail and snow to parts of the North State, prompting the California Department of Transportation to issue chain requirements for stretches of Interstate 5 and Highway 44.
Chains are required on commercial vehicles on a 3 mile stretch Interstate 5 starting at Gibson Road south of Dunsmuir and required on every vehicle traveling Highway 44 in Shingletown, and Highway 89 between McCloud and Mt. Shasta.
A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for areas above 3,500 feet. Forecasters say seven to 15 inches of snow could fall at 3,500 feet, with some snowfall being seen at 3,000 feet.
