Two people wanted on outstanding warrants were taken into custody after leading sheriff’s deputies on a high speed chase that ended when the driver collided with a big rig Wednesday.
Butte County deputies received a tip that Wayne Alan Smith and Elaine Garvey, of Chico, were staying at a home on Dayton Road in southwest Chico.
The chase began around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday when deputies tried to pull the duo over as they pulled out of the driveway. The driver, Smith, then led deputies south on Dayton Road for three miles, at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The crash came to a halt when Smith failed to stop at the Durham-Dayton Road intersection and collided with a big rig.
Garvey was taken into custody without incident, but Smith tried to flee on foot. He was arrested a short time later. Both Smith and Garvey were booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of evading, possession of meth, possession of a switch-blade knife, and outstanding warrants.
The big rig driver, and all responding law enforcement officials were uninjured.
