It pays to be the best.
The Chico State track and field team played host to the Twilight Meet on Saturday at University Stadium, but it was a special ceremony to honor the country's best decathlon team that temporarily turned attention away from the track.
Chico State was presented with the Webb Cup, awarded annually to the No. 1 decathlon school in the nation, regardless of Division. The Wildcats - which finished ahead of 10 Division I schools in the final rankings - earned the eye-catching trophy and title for the 2014 season on the strength of All-America decathlon performances by John Brunk, Teddy Elsenbaumer and National Champion J Patrick Smith.
As for the day's action, the 'Cats women ran away with the team title, piling up 234.5 points to easily defeat second place Cal State Stanislaus (93 points).
On the men's side, Chico State took first with 142.87 points. Lane CC from Eugene, Oregon took second with 105.87 points.
