A Redding police officer attempted to pull over a stolen truck around 2:30 Saturday afternoon. When the driver failed to stop a short pursuit began. The 33-year-old driver was going westbound on Rancho Road and was unable to make a right turn onto Alta Camino Drive, sending the car through a brick wall and into the front yardof a residence on the northwest corner of the intersection.
The driver then fled on foot, with the pursuing officer chasing him. During the foot chase, the driver circled back and got into the officer's patrol car. An assisting officer found the stolen police car near the crash site. He saw the suspect fleeing again on foot. The officer chased him down and waited for the arrival of other officers to help arrest the resisting suspect. As they struggled to make the arrest, officers noticed the suspect suddenly quit resisting and realized that he was not breathing. They immediately started to perform CPR to revive the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. All involved officers are on paid administrative leave while an investigation gets underway.
The names of the all officers and the suspect have not been released at this time.
