Chico State Police Chief Robyn Hearne said they're seeing an increase in bicycle thefts this year.
Chief Hearne said some of the responsibility lies with students.
She often sees students with expensive bikes, but with inexpensive locks.
Chief Hearne said they see a surge of thefts the first semester of every year and this year is no exception.
“This year especially we've noticed a lot of them stolen. With that, we've also made a lot of recoveries and made quite a few arrests,” Hearne said.
“I would stay away from the u-locks with the round-type key,” said Nick Olashalverson, with Campus Bicycles. “I know there's been videos on the internet of them being broken into with pens.”
Campus Bicycles recommends registering your bike with the city. You can also register with Chico state police by calling their dispatch center.
