California under fire over free rides for drunk lawmakers

California lawmakers are coming under fire for hiring drivers to provide 24-hour service following high-profile drunken driving arrests.

Because the move follows the drunken driving arrests, a lot of residents believe the drivers were hired to help Senators avoid DUI's.

Officially the drivers are for "emergency services", but Senator Jeff Stone says that's not the reality.

"There is no reason to have anyone on staff 24 hours a day, which is really nothing more than a specialized transport for those that may over indulge," Stone says.

The new overnight Senate employees at the capitol where hired in February.

The leader of the Senate released a statement on behalf of the Sergeant-at-Arms saying "The positions are important... and are a matter of security."
