California power supplies adequate as summer heat nears

LOS ANGELES (AP) - With the summer heat approaching, analysts say California has sufficient power supplies to keep air conditioners running and the lights on.

The agency that operates the state's wholesale power system said in an analysis Thursday that enough electricity should be available to meet demand this summer, even if an extreme hot streak sets in.

California Independent System Operator CEO Steve Berberich says it's always a challenge to keep power flowing during heat waves. But the agency predicts enough electricity will be on hand to meet traditionally higher summer demand.

Recently developed solar plants are helping keep supplies reliable, even as a severe drought has cut into hydroelectric power production.
