MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) - A San Francisco Bay Area police officer has been sentenced to a year in jail after he was convicted of attacking a woman with a baseball bat.

Authorities say 54-year-old Gregory Thompson thought the woman was trying to break into his father's vacant house when he attacked her in August in Richmond while wearing a mask. The woman had actually run out of gas and was walking in the neighborhood.

Thompson was an officer with the Walnut Creek police department at the time, but was off duty.

He pleaded no contest last month to assault, vandalism and a weapons enhancement and was sentenced on Friday.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports he is eligible to serve six months of the sentence under home detention and receive credit toward the other six months.

Thompson retired from the police department in September.
