SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California sanctuary for circus and zoo animals has euthanized a 55-year-old elephant named Annie.
The Sacramento Bee reported Saturday on the last days of the Indian elephant.
The Performing Animal Welfare Society refuge in Calaveras County euthanized Annie on Nov. 18. Annie had lived most of her life chained in a zoo in the northeast U.S. A videotape of her being beaten by her handlers there sparked an outcry in 1994, and the zoo sent Annie to the sprawling California refuge. Veterinarian Jackie Gai says Annie suffered from arthritis and foot diseases - ailments common in captive elephants.
Refuge founder Ed Stewart says keepers gave Annie last meals of Frosted Flakes cereal, alfalfa and hay and spent the day with her before euthanizing her.
