COACHELLA, Calif. (AP) - Southern California authorities say a mosque in the desert city of Coachella was struck by gunfire.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says a report of shots fired was received at 5:01 a.m. Tuesday and responding officers determined that several shots struck the Islamic Society of Coachella Valley building and a vehicle. No injuries were reported, however.

A Sheriff's Department statement says the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

A regional office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has issued a statement calling for an FBI investigation.

Coachella is about 25 miles southeast of Palm Springs.
