RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A federal judge has granted class-action status to a civil rights lawsuit by Riverside County inmates who claim there's inadequate medical and mental health care in the county's five jails.
The Press-Enterprise reports the judge ruled this week that the most general class includes all prisoners who are subjected to the medical and mental health practices of Riverside County." About 4,000 inmates are in the county system at any given time.
The lawsuit filed last year says the county has acted with "deliberate indifference" regarding issues of health care. It claims inadequate numbers of health care personnel including physicians.
The suit was filed by attorneys with the Prison Law Office in Berkeley. They say they are not seeking money for their clients, but reform.
