California gas prices continue to soar, Chico prices up 32 cents

Average retail gasoline prices in Chico have risen 32.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.03 a gallon Sunday.

According to, Including the change in gas prices in Chico during the past week, prices yesterday were 66.8 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 77.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 37.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 103.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Gas prices in California have been soaring following an explosion that stopped production at a key refinery in Torrance. The blast took gas production offline there at the same time that another refinery in Northern California is also down. The two refineries together produce 17 percent of the state's gasoline.

California can't easily import gasoline from other states because of strict environmental laws that mandate a specialized blend of fuel.
