A California rock band that has in the past included Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and actor Jack Black was due to play a famed Paris nightclub when attackers began taking hostages.

The band, Eagles of Death Metal, is fronted by Joshua Homme, a singer and guitarist who was also a founding member of Queens of the Stone Age.

Hommes' steady partner in the band is Jesse Hughes, also a guitarist and singer. They have used a string of temporary members in the past, including Grohl and Black, and were reportedly touring with three other musicians.

Eagles of Death Metal — not actually a death metal band; the name is an inside joke — was formed in Palm Desert, California, in 1998, and last month released their fourth album, Zipper Down, and were in the middle of a European tour.

The duo White Miles was the opening act.

The condition of the audience or band members at Le Bataclan was not immediately available Friday evening, as the hostage crisis was still ongoing.
