SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California widower is breathing a sigh of relief after not only getting his stolen car back but an urn containing his late wife's ashes.
Stockton police took two people into custody Saturday in connection with the theft of a car carrying the ashes of the wife of 78-year-old Melvin Hayes.
A car wash attendant in suburban Sacramento on Thursday apparently handed the keys to Hayes' Ford Fusion to a woman pretending to know him. Hayes soon learned his car and the urn with his wife's remains were gone.
The couple would've celebrated their 49th anniversary in January. She died in November.
On Saturday, authorities told Hayes his car was located and that the urn was discovered inside the trunk.
The alleged thieves face felony charges of vehicle theft.
