Beginning in mid-September, Chico and Hamilton City residents will be seeing their water rates increase an average of 20 percent.
The rate increase for California Service Company was approved by the California Public Utilities Company this week after a 25-month rate review.
Investor-owned Cal Water says the typical residential customer will see about a $7 increase to about $41 a month, but that's not the only increase for those customers, the California Public Utilities Company also agreed to make the increase retroactive to January 1. That increase will show up in the form of a temporary surcharge in September, which amounts to $56 extra.
Cal Water officials say the increase is needed so the company can continue to provide a safe and reliable water source for its customers.
