Fire officials say the blaze that broke out near the Keswick Dam Tuesday afternoon was started in a nearby transient camp.

The fire broke out a little before 1 p.m. near Middle Creek at the Sacramento River Trail.

According to Cal Fire, the fire had burned 18 acres, and was 80 percent contained as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. Crews are expected to remain on scene Wednesday mopping up in the thick vegetation and steep terrain.

The fire burned land in the city of Redding and Shasta County, but investigators say the fire was sparked at an illegal encampment within the Redding city limits.
